9 Jupiter ’ s Thermosphere and Ionosphere

چکیده
Jupiter’s upper atmosphere forms the boundary between the lower atmosphere and interplanetary space. As the topmost layer, the thermosphere absorbs solar extreme ultraviolet (EUV) radiation and charged particles from the magnetosphere that cause dissociation and ionization of thermospheric molecules. Subsequent chemistry establishes the ionosphere and the densities of minor, photoand electrochemically produced constituents. Densities are low in the upper atmosphere and the mean free path between collisions is large, varying from 10 cm near 1μbar at the base of the thermosphere to 150 km near 2.5 pbar at the exobase, the top of the thermosphere. Because of this large mean free path, molecular diffusion becomes dominant over convective mixing and thermal conduction becomes an important term in the energy balance equation. The low collision rates also imply that the population of molecular energy levels may depart from their local thermodynamic equilibrium (LTE) values.

Jupiter Thermospheric General Circulation Model (JTGCM): Global structure and dynamics driven by auroral and Joule heating
[1] A growing multispectral database plus recent Galileo descent measurements are being used to construct a self-consistent picture of the Jupiter thermosphere/ionosphere system. The proper characterization of Jupiter’s upper atmosphere, embedded ionosphere, and auroral features requires the examination of underlying processes, including the feedbacks of energetics, neutral-ion dynamics, compos...
متن کاملJupiter: Aerosol Chemistry in the Polar Atmosphere.
Aromatic compounds have been considered a likely candidate for enhanced aerosol formation in the polar region of Jupiter. We develop a new chemical model for aromatic compounds in the Jovian auroral thermosphere/ionosphere. The model is based on a previous model for hydrocarbon chemistry in the Jovian atmosphere and is constrained by observations from Voyager, Galileo, and the Infrared Space Ob...
متن کاملThe Atmosphere and Ionosphere of Jupiter
The properties of the atmosphere of Jupiter are reviewed in the light of observations carried out by the Voyager mission. Solar occultation measurements in the ultraviolet show that the temperature of the upper atmosphere is II00±200K, an apparent increase of about 30% from the value obtained by the Pioneer mission in 1973. Stellar occultation in the ultraviolet indicate that the temperature gr...

متن کاملQuasi two day wave-related variability in the background dynamics and composition of the mesosphere/thermosphere and the ionosphere
Dissipating planetary waves in the mesosphere/lower thermosphere (MLT) region may cause changes in the background dynamics of that region, subsequently driving variability throughout the broader thermosphere/ionosphere system via mixing due to the induced circulation changes. We report the results of case studies examining the possibility of such coupling during the northern winter in the conte...
